Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 is the composer’s last complete symphony. Completed in 1824, it is often considered by critics to be one of his greatest works, and many consider it to be one of the greatest compositions of all time. The symphony was the first example of a major composer using voices in a symphony. The words, sung during the final movement by four soloists and chorus, were taken from the poem Ode to Joy, written by Friedrich Schiller in 1785 with text additions made by the composer.
